Almajiri Project

CHRICED with support from the United States Embassy in Nigeria worked on a project to end the labour exploitation of Almajiri, with support from. It was an advocacy project targeting government and community stakeholders on the need to understand that the Almajiri children have fundamental rights as children, which should be protected and promoted. Almajiri children participated prominently in the project, through experience sharing sessions, key informants interviews and Focus Group Discussions. CHRICED has a rich network of former Almajiri children, who have exited the system, and have a rich knowledge of its workings. Former Almajiri children who are worried about the abuses of the system, and are passionate about the need to reform it, constitute an important force in the reform process. CHRICED continues to engage these former Almajiri students in its advocacy to stem the tide of forced child begging in Northern Nigeria. Read report:
